Starting January 1, 2026, e-invoicing will become a legal requirement for all VAT-registered businesses (with some exceptions). From that date, Belgian companies will need to send their invoices in a digital format, and their suppliers will also send their invoices in the same format.
E-invoicing is much more than just a PDF sent by email!
From 2026, paper, PDF, Word, and Excel invoices will be a thing of the past! Don’t confuse a .pdf invoice with a structured electronic invoice (UBL): PEPPOL. An electronic invoice is a document created, sent, and received in a structured electronic format. This format allows accounting software to read and process e-invoices without any manual re-entry.
